The earlier the problems are detected and treated the better it would be As an immediate measure one must consult the doctor on occurrence of the problem but here I would state a few precautions, which if adopted would definitely help in avoiding the skin problems for diabetic patients.
- Keep your skin dry at all places on the body, like armpits, under the breasts etc and if required use the talcum powder for keeping dryness at sweating places.
- Keep your skin clean and free from dust and dirt, this might require frequent washing with recommended soaps.
- Make sure that the shoes you wear should be comfortable and should not damage your feet. Especially some foreign object in the shoes could damage the skin. Also remain observant about your feet and try to keep them open by wearing open and flat shoes / sleepers etc.
- Keep your skin moisturized, if you have dry skin (read types of skins article). And if you feel itchy on some portion of the body, apply some recommended lotion or cream instead of hard scratching the itching portion.
- Emphasize on wearing cotton cloth, since it permits circulation of air to skin.
- If you experience some damage on the skin, simply do not try dealing it yourself, rush to doctor and consult him/her for a good ointment instead of using the routine ones.
- Use appropriate mild shampoos, creams and lotions, which contain least of chemicals, since these could severely damage the skin, due to their frequent usages.
- An indirect way of taking care of skin is to keep your blood sugar level in control.
- Take running water or normal water baths. Do not go for extreme hot water and bubble baths And after bath, use appropriate lotions and creams. Try not to use the lotions and creams at places, where it’s less absorbable and accumulates for long, like between the toes, since it might develop fungus there.
- Take plenty of water and sugar free juices to keep your body and skin moisturized.
- Use proper clothing and gloves while working outside to avoid damage to skin from direct sunlight.
For diabetic patients the open cracks are open doors for bacteria and the immunity to fight with bacteria is vey less in such patients. Taking care of skin is extremely important for such patients since the healing is very difficult as well.
